In a fairly new region, Bingham football and its schedule will look different to most
Aug 09, 2025 07:18PM ● By Brian ShawIn years past, the Corner Canyon Chargers were a rival of the Miners in Region 2.
Not any longer.
After the Utah High School Athletics and Activities Association, the state’s governing body for sanctioned sports, realigned Region 2, Bingham found itself with a number of new league opponents.
Westlake is one, and so is Cedar Valley.
Other than that, Region 2 will stay the same, as Copper Hills, Mountain Ridge, Herriman and Riverton return, making it seven teams for football.
For this Miners team under second-year head coach Josh Johnson, they’ll first have to worry about an away contest at Corner Canyon on Aug. 15 to open the 2025-26 season. After being one of the Miners’ primary rivals for more than a decade, Corner Canyon moves into Region 3 in Class 6A with a number of Utah County schools after its preseason.
In Week 2, the Miners will play their first home game of the season at Ron Thorne Stadium against Alta on Aug. 21, on a short week of preparation. The Hawks are not the power they were back in the 2000s and 2010s, but they could still present Bingham with a stiff early-season test.
Week 3 will have the Miners playing their first game in this new Region 2, as they will host Westlake. The Thunder finished the 2024-25 season with a 3-9 record, but expect the Utah County school to be ready for this one as it will be their first game in the new league.
Week 4 arguably provides the most interesting matchup of the season for the Miners, as they’ll travel to nationally ranked Corona (California) Centennial Sept. 6 in a nonregion showdown. Bingham last played a California school when No. 1 Mater Dei of Los Angeles visited South Jordan on a Saturday night several years ago—one that featured as many as two dozen future college football players in the red jerseys. In the case of Centennial, you already know one of their alumni in former BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff.
Week 5 brings the Miners back from sunny California as they’ll host rival Herriman on Sept. 13. The Miners needed a 15-point fourth quarter, punctuated by an 80-yard Charger Doty kickoff return, to win 21-0 last season against Herriman.
Week 6 will also be a home game for Bingham, as the Miners take on another rival: Riverton on Sept. 19. Last year’s game was a barnburner, ending only when the Miners made a defensive stand in the fourth quarter to secure a 21-16 victory. This year will also mark Senior Night, the earliest such date in recent memory.
Week 7 gives the Miners an opportunity to travel for the first time since that trip to Southern California, as they’ll be away Sept. 26 at Cedar Valley, the other newcomer to Region 2. The North Utah County-based Aviators have quickly made the leap from Class 4A to 5A, and they will now see what they’ve got in Utah’s classification of its largest schools.
Week 8 will also be on the road when the Miners travel Oct. 3 to Copper Hills. Bingham rolled to a 35-14 win at home against the Grizzlies last season.
Week 9 marks the third straight that the Miners will be on the road, a region finale Oct. 10 at Mountain Ridge. In a defensive battle last year, the Miners won 8-7 on a successful two-point conversion run with just 44 seconds remaining.
With a Region 2 title possibly on the line for both teams, you can guarantee some fireworks when Bingham and Mountain Ridge meet.
Week 10 will see the Miners wrap up their regular season against rival Lone Peak Oct. 17 at Ron Thorne Stadium. The Miners and Knights have had epic battles in years past; last year’s season opener might have been the exception, as Bingham lost 21-0.
This year, however, the Miners will not only be looking to improve on their 5-6 record and second round state playoff exit at home, Bingham will also be looking to advance deeper in the tournament.
